Animal Behavior College Short Term Programs
A Short Term Program is a course of study that provides students a window into an additional facet of animal career education. Each of our Short Term Programs provides individuals with advanced knowledge in a particular area of the animal industry. At ABC, we strongly encourage our students and alumni to continue learning and improving upon their skills throughout their career. This is where ABC’s Short Term Programs come in.
Currently, ABC offers seven Short Term Programs:
Doggie Daycare - New Program!Dog daycare service is rapidly expanding; it has grown by more than 12 percentage points over the past 10 years and will continue to do so. Done correctly, doggie daycare service can be incredibly lucrative. Learn how to do it right and reap the benefits of this growing market by enrolling in ABC’s Doggie Daycare short-term program. In this course, we cover everything you need to know to start and run a successful doggie daycare, including facility considerations, insurance, licensing and permit requirements, equipment needs, marketing and promotional advice, daily care and activities for dogs, and working with owners.
Pet Fostering – New Program!The Pet Fostering Short Term Program instructs you on how to work with an animal shelter or rescue to set up a pet fostering program. You will learn how to select and retain volunteers as well as match foster animals with volunteers, along with other skills essential to maintaining a pet fostering program.
Training Shelter Dogs(Available to Dog Obedience Program students and alumni only)
As a professional dog trainer, you will commonly encounter dogs that temporarily reside in shelters and rescues. ABC's Short Term Program Training Shelter Dogs is a comprehensive program that instructs you how to work with dogs in these situations and will strive to hone their obedience skills in hopes of helping them to become adopted. Topics will range from approaching shelters and their staff appropriately and professionally, identifying dogs with potential for adoption, defensive handling and safety, understanding shelter stressors, assessing canine behavior, identifying and building drive, shelter health consideration, training goals and challenges, training for behavioral issues, training for family members, special considerations for shy, fearful, and aggressive dogs, charting and/or keeping records, facilitating or assisting with adoptions, as well as ethics and professional conduct. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed in order to start a shelter training program in which you can hold classes and/or seminars at shelters.
The Art of Selling and Teaching Private Lessons(Available to Dog Obedience Program students and alumni only)
This Short Term Program will ameliorate your knowledge of proper private-lesson training and will instruct you on such imperative topics as sales techniques and tips, understanding communication styles, the different types of private training, developing effective training plans, how to teach off-leash behaviors, and how to achieve client compliance in order to maximize the successfulness of your training. Additionally, this Short Term Program covers advanced tips for marketing yourself and your business and includes essential information on liability protection, a necessity for every dog trainer.
Pet Sitting and Dog WalkingAs a pet professional, you will come into contact with clients who seek an individual to care for or walk their beloved pets while they are away at work or on vacation. ABC’s Short Term Program Pet Sitting and Dog Walking is designed to educate ABC graduates about the ins and outs of the business and provide you with the expertise of caring for a variety of pets. Topics range from identifying and understanding body language, canine, feline and avian behavior, basic nutrition and hygiene, creating mental and physical stimulation, building relationships with your clients’ pets, personal and home owner safety, creating and maintaining schedules, walking a dog calmly on-leash, building clientele, and much more! This course will provide you with the knowledge to start a career as a professional pet sitter and/or dog walker, or to add these to your list of pet services offered.
Pet Nutrition and DietThe Pet Nutrition and Diet Short Term Program discusses basic nutrition, the regulations governing commercial pet foods, and the nutritional needs for both cats and dogs. In this course, you will learn how to read pet food labels including the importance of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and protective nutrients. You will also learn about the different types of diets (i.e. dry food, canned food, raw food, supplements, etc.) and how food can play a huge role in a pet's behavior. After the completion of this course, you will have the knowledge to educate your clients on how to provide their animals with the best nutrition based on their pet's individual age, weight, and health condition.
Pet MassageThe Pet Massage Short Term Program gives pet groomers, dog trainers and veterinary staff the skills to calm every pet they interact with. The ability to soothe and calm dogs and cats through touch improves the human-animal relationship and promotes trust and bonding. Pet groomers can have a calm animal on their grooming table, which allows them to move swiftly through the process of grooming without the problems heavy-handed groomers might experience. Veterinary staff can minimize discomfort and pain and help pets recovering from injuries or soothe the aches of elderly animals. Dog trainers can create a more positive training experience due to their enhanced knowledge of canine anatomy and acute awareness of touch zones. Pet Massage is a growing occupation and completion of this course can also open the door to a profitable pet massage business of your own. This comprehensive course includes step-by-step instructions on massage for different sizes and types of pets. Topics include general anatomy and physiology, principles and concepts for different types of massage, creating your workspace, preparing yourself, details for how to develop a pet massage business and much more! Also, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) has approved this course for 21 CEU credits.

What will I get upon completion of the Short Term Program (i.e., what certification will I receive)?
Upon successful completion of the Short Term Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion which can be downloaded from the Student or Alumni Center. You can then proudly display your certificate for your clients and loved ones to see.
How much does it cost to purchase a Short Term Program?
Currently, our Short Term Programs are being offered at the low cost of only $300.00.
How long does a program take to complete?
The maximum time allotted for completion of each Short Term Program is six months; however, the program can be completed as quickly as you like depending on the amount of time to can contribute to your studies.
Once I purchase a Short Term Program, how soon can I access the information?
The Short Term Programs are available for purchase at the time of enrollment, during the program, and after graduation. If you purchased a Short Term Program at the time of enrollment, your Program Manager will grant you access upon completing stage 9 of the program. If you wish to purchase a Short Term Program after graduation, you must be registered as an ABC Alumni member in order to access it. Your payment may take up to 1 week for processing and approval. Once approved, you will receive an email notifying you when you can access the Short Term Program.
