The holiday season is a time for delicious food, family gatherings, and plenty of treats. But while you’re enjoying your festive feast, it’s important to remember that many traditional holiday dishes can be harmful to your pets. Instead of slipping them table scraps, you can include them in the celebration with safe, healthy homemade treats made just for them!
Why Skip the Table Scraps
It’s tempting to share a little turkey or pie with your furry friend, but many common holiday ingredients—like onions, garlic, chocolate, raisins, nutmeg, and butter—can upset your pet’s stomach or even be toxic. Rich, fatty foods can also lead to pancreatitis, a painful and dangerous condition for both dogs and cats. The good news? You can still make them feel special with homemade treats that are both tasty and pet-safe.

Festive Dog Treat Ideas
1. Pumpkin Peanut Butter Bites
Pumpkin is full of fiber and great for digestion, while peanut butter adds flavor and protein (just be sure it’s xylitol-free). Combine 1 cup of pumpkin purée, ½ cup of peanut butter, and 2 cups of whole wheat flour. Roll out the dough, cut into fun holiday shapes, and bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes.
2. Apple Cinnamon Crunchies
Dogs love apples, and a touch of cinnamon makes these smell amazing. Mix 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and 2 cups of oat flour. Bake at 325°F for 25–30 minutes, or until crispy.
Simple Cat Treats to Try
1. Tuna & Catnip Puffs
Mix one can of tuna (in water), 1 egg, and 2 tablespoons of whole wheat flour. Pro tip: Run the mixture through a food processor to ensure it is thoroughly mixed and “puffs” during baking! Drop small spoonfuls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 10–12 minutes. Sprinkle with a pinch of catnip for a fun twist!
2. Salmon Bites
Combine ½ cup of cooked salmon, 1 egg, and 1 tablespoon of oat flour. Form into tiny balls and bake at 350°F for 10 minutes. Store in the fridge for up to five days.
Safe Holiday Cheer
Your pets don’t need to miss out on the holiday spirit—they just need their own version of it. Homemade treats are a thoughtful way to keep them happy and healthy, while also avoiding the risks that come with feeding table scraps. These treats also make great gifts for your friends who are pet parents!
So this season, when you’re baking cookies or carving the roast, take a few minutes to whip up some pet-friendly goodies. It’s a simple act of love your furry companions will appreciate—and one that will keep their tails wagging well into the new year.
