Things to Know When Considering a Dog Grooming Career

Dog Grooming Certifications - Animal Behavior College

Is Dog Grooming a Career for You?

Besides the high demand for good Dog Groomers, the profession offers other benefits, including being able to a build strong, meaningful relationships with clients and their pets.

Dog Groomers’ relationships with their four-legged clientele and their owners can, in turn, lead to referrals, which is a great form of networking.

And professionals who do exceptional work can earn tips from their appreciative customers. Plus, there’s always an opportunity to show-off your creativity with specific breed cuts and client requests.

In addition, Dog Grooming is a very mobile profession. If you are someone who often moves from city to city, you can still groom pets no matter where you live. There are Pet Businesses across the U.S. and Canada.

Dog Groomers can work practically anywhere: from home, mobile shops, brick & mortar locations, veterinary offices, doggie day cares, kennels, shelters and rescues.

Some Things to Know Before becoming a Dog Groomer

  • You should be someone who animals, specifically dogs, are attracted to
  • You should be someone who is creative and artsy
  • You should be a patient person who doesn’t mind getting wet

Dog Grooming is hard work but its rewards and flexibility can make it a very rewarding career.

How Do I Become a Dog Groomer?

How do I become a dog groomer? The answer is as close as your keyboard. Animal Behavior College offers an exceptional online dog grooming course that pairs virtual learning and hands-on experience with a professional mentor pet groomer near you.

The ABC Grooming Instruction Program is affordable and designed to be completed in 52 weeks. The comprehensive pet grooming curriculum includes over 900 pages of written material, a 30+-piece professional grooming toolkit, over 100 instructional videos and hands-on training. The program allows you to work at your own pace, on your own schedule. When the online portion is completed, each student is paired with a local mentor to complete a minimum of 150 hours of hands-on experience in an externship.

Is There Another Way to Become a Groomer?

You could try things the old-fashioned way but it’s not highly recommended because starting a dog grooming career used to be far less straightforward. There weren’t many brick and mortar training options for would-be pet groomers, so people had to learn the profession as best they could. They practiced with their own dogs and cats as well as the pets of friends and family or they read books on grooming. If you were lucky, a professional would be willing to help out and give advice or take you on as an apprentice groomer.

The results were hit or miss, and anyone seeking a groomer for their pet sometimes had to take their chances.

Certified Pet Groomers Know Their Stuff

By earning your dog groomer certification through Animal Behavior College you will be able to offer your clients or future employer proof of your abilities. ABC certification demonstrates that you know your stuff when it comes to pet grooming. You will also be confident of your own newfound skills, having had many hours of hands-on training in a professional setting.

Whether you want to work for an established company or start your own independent pet grooming business, enrolling in the Animal Behavior College Grooming Instruction Program is a great first step to a rewarding career!
