From Childhood Curiosity to Industry Leader: Devon Marlow’s Journey in Aquarium Care

From Childhood Curiosity to Industry Leader:
Devon Marlow’s Journey in Aquarium Care

By: The ABC Staff

Devon Marlow’s journey into the world of aquarium care began long before it became his profession. At just ten years old, while many kids were asking for toys or video games, Devon had a different request: a 55-gallon aquarium. That single gift sparked a lifelong passion that would eventually shape his career. Reflecting on those early years, Devon explains that he “wasn’t just interested in aquariums – I understood them,” a mindset that set him apart even at a young age.

From the beginning, Devon was captivated by the balance and complexity of aquatic ecosystems. He immersed himself in fish care, water testing, and aquatic literature, turning his aquarium into both a hobby and a hands-on learning experience. By the time he reached middle school, his knowledge had already set him apart. When a school pond experienced a sudden die-off, Devon was the one teachers turned to for answers. At only twelve years old, he correctly identified the cause as a combination of acid rain and temperature shock, an early example of the instinct and insight he continues to rely on today.

Although Devon built a strong foundation through years of independent learning, he recognized the importance of formal education to elevate his skills. With a professional background as an ER technician, he understood the value of standards, precision, and ethical responsibility when working with living beings. This perspective shaped his belief that aquarium care should be treated with the same level of professionalism. As he puts it, he believes the field should be “held to the same professional standards as any field that protects living things.”

This mindset led him to Animal Behavior College’s Aquarium Maintenance Program, where he found the structure, accountability, and flexibility he had been searching for. While continuing to run his business, Devon was able to deepen his knowledge of water chemistry, disease prevention, ethical husbandry, and system design. The program challenged him in meaningful ways, strengthening his expertise while filling in gaps he hadn’t previously identified.

Today, Devon is the owner and operator of EasyClean Aquatics and is proud to be one of the only certified aquarium technicians in Western North Carolina. He works with a wide range of aquatic systems, including freshwater and saltwater aquariums, reef systems, planted tanks, and ponds. His services go beyond routine maintenance. He also cultures microfauna, studies fish behavior, and helps clients troubleshoot complex aquatic environments.

Devon’s mission is to raise the standard of aquarium care and promote science-based, ethical practices throughout his community. He emphasizes that aquariums are far more than decorative features, noting that they are “ecosystems that deserve respect.” This philosophy drives both his work and his commitment to educating others.

In addition to his technical expertise, Devon is deeply passionate about conservation. He highlights the important role aquarists play in protecting species and supporting environmental sustainability, reinforcing his belief that responsible fishkeeping can have a meaningful global impact.

Devon’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when passion meets purpose. His advice to others entering the field is simple but impactful: “Never stop learning… and always strive to raise the standard.”
