How to Become a Cat Trainer

How to Become a What?

To most people, the phrase “how to become a cat trainer” might sound like a funny meme or the punchline of a joke.  But for just that reason, savvy animal lovers looking for a less crowded career in the pet profession would do well to consider cat training certification.

Consider a few facts.  Even though well over a third of U.S. households have at least one cat, cat trainers are far rarer than dog trainers.  Fewer schools that offer a dog training program also offer separate, specialized cat training certification.  At present, there is simply not a glut of cat trainers on the job market.

What Can You Train a Cat to Do?

In general, cats have a reputation for being standoffish, and unlike dogs, they do not seem inclined to please humans.  However, this does not make cats–especially young cats–untrainable.  Although cats can be taught to do tricks, most people seek out a cat trainer in order to curb unwanted behaviors, such as spraying, refusing to use a litter box, counter surfing, or biting and clawing.

So How Do I Become a Cat Trainer?

If you want to learn how to become a cat trainer, you need to study cat behavior, health, and wellness and learn what motivates them.  Becoming a certified cat trainer gives you the tools to help build a better relationship between cats and their people.  Certification also indicates to prospective employers that you are trained in the profession.

Some pet societies offer workshops or other pathways to cat trainer certification.  Schools such as ABC, however, give you a far better understanding of all aspects of the profession.  ABC’s thorough program takes an average of eight months to complete and provides a solid background in the feline mind, the prevention of unwanted behaviors, cat training techniques, cat health, care and nutrition.

In addition, students learn pet CPR and First Aid and participate in an in person “shelter experience” at their local animal shelters, getting the chance to observe cats more closely and get hands-on experience.

How Do I Launch My Career?

ABC wants to see our graduates succeeding in their chosen profession!  Therefore, part of the cat training course curriculum includes a business building component.  In it, students learn job interview etiquette and how to create a professional resume.  For those hoping to launch an independent career, the course covers marketing and other helpful skills.

After completion of certification, ABC continues to support graduates through a variety of alumni benefits, such as business forms, discounts on pet products, and lifetime access to curriculum.  More importantly, graduates have access to ABC’s private job postings site and will be listed on their directory of ABC certified cat trainers.  The directory has an option for you to create your own profile and update it, if you like.  Graduates who want to create their own cat training business can take advantage of ABC’s low-cost website building tool.

When Can I Start?

Why not now?  Because ABC is online, we offer open enrollment.  To get started, call us at 800-795-3294 and set up an interview.
