ABC Grooming Instruction Program Student of the Month– June 2013

Steven Dawdy Steven Dawdy - June 2013 Student of the Month

Steven resides in Kansas City, Mo.,, where he currently works as a groomer at the local Petco. Beginning with his initial contact with Animal Behavior College back in 2011 it was and is very apparent that Steven has the drive and sincere desire to work in the animal industry. He first thought becoming a dog trainer would be the best fit, toward the end Steven enrolled in and completed ABC’s Dog Obedience Instructor Program (DOP). After his DOP certification, Steven decided pet grooming was also something that interested him—and it would be an outlet for his passion and creativity. Steven is now in the finishing stages of the Grooming Instruction Program and he is thriving both in his externship as well as in his current position as a groomer.

  • What was the biggest challenge you faced during your externship and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge was being left-handed. For instance, when groomers would show me how to properly hold a grooming tool, I found it a bit difficult to mimic them since I need to angle both my hands and tools in a way that allows me to comfortably and confidently use both. How comfortable I felt varied on the way they were showing me; however, I later realized that every groomer has his/her own style and that no groomer grooms the same. This allowed me to understand that the way I was holding my grooming tools was indeed not “wrong.”

  • What are your plans for the future?

I plan on obtaining as much knowledge and experience as I possible can. I would like to open up my own all-inclusive pet spa, where I would offer boarding, dog training and grooming. I would like to focus on the “spa effect” for animals due to its current popularity.

  • If you could style a dog or cat after any celebrity, who would it be and why?

I would choose Nikki Minaj due to her creative style. I would enjoy the challenge of having my animal client look like Ms. Minaj. She is most famously recognized due to her unique and colorful hair and fashion sense.

  • What grooming technique do you hope to master on during the next 12 months?

I would like to perfect my breed cut skills so that clients who prefer their animals to have specific breed cuts will be able to direct their business to me. I hope to master the most popular cuts that clients tend to request.
