ABC Grooming Instruction Program Student of the Month– July 2013
After Rebecca Koltz completed her nine written stages and practice work, she hit the ground running and started her externship requirements immediately at Circle Kennel Club with owner Steve Schroeder. Rebecca has always had a love for animals and often pet sat for friends and family. She decided to pursue her passion and make an everyday job out of it.
- What grooming technique do you hope to master on over the next 12 months?
I hope to really expand my knowledge on scissoring and faces. Once I am master these skills, it will move my services up to the next level. I am always willing to learn from anyone who will share any of their skills.
- Was grooming your first choice for a career?
I actually was looking into going to school to become a veterinary assistant. I have always known that my passion was for helping animals and what better place then an animal hospital. While doing research on different animal fields I came across Animal Behavior College and their grooming program. I knew at that point exactly what animal career was for me.
- What animal or person most inspired you to pursue a career in the animal industry?
My dog Brandi is a border collie-lab mix and the love of my life. She has been a great companion and showed me just how much love can go with an animal. Brandi gave me the courage to pursue my dreams. Not to mention she was a good practice dog.
- Describe the knowledge and experience you gained as an ABC certified pet groomer
During my externship one of the most difficult parts was dealing with the “once-a-year” clients. ABC staff and my mentors taught me how to handle these extreme dogs and how to discuss better options with their owners. Although these dogs came in dirty, matted and scared, I now have the skills to make their visits more enjoyable.
- What are your plans for the future?
I am keeping an open mind to any opportunities in the animal field. My No. 1 goal is helping all animals. ABC gave me all the skills I need to make my clients feel good. I will be taking that knowledge and striving to be the best animal lover I can be.
