What prompted you to become a veterinary assistant? Was there a specific event, circumstance or person who inspired you to pursue this career?

The person who inspired me to pursue this career was my veterinarian, Dr.Leslie Gall. She has been the one taking care of all of my animals. Seeing her make a difference in these animals life encouraged me to make my career change.

What was/is the biggest challenge you faced during your externship and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced was learning and understanding the terminology. This was all foreign to me since I’ve worked in retail my whole life. I also struggled with surgery. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to work alongside a very helpful staff. They made the learning experience a lot more pleasant. I would also go home and go over my textbook and use it as a reference.

Describe a humorous moment you witnessed or took part in while working at a your externship location.

A very humorous moment in my externship was when I was assisting Dr. Fry express a Chihuahua’s anal glands. I am not sure what went wrong but the dog’s glands exploded all over the doctor’s face. It was very gross but all we both could do was laugh at the situation. Who would have thought that a little 20-lb. dog could produce so much anal gland fluid!

How did you hear about the ABC program and what convinced you to become a certified veterinary assistant?

I heard about ABC through a commercial on TV. At that point I was already ready to leave my retail job. After watching the commercial, I knew this was the new career change for me. I contacted the school shortly afterwards. The first person who I spoke to was my admissions counselor Larry. He was very informative and really convinced to sign up.

What has your experience been like in the ABC Veterinary Assistant Program?

I’ve really enjoyed my experience with ABC. The program itself has been very thorough. The videos online have also been very helpful in my learning experience, and the externship really helped my put everything I learned together.
